Autumn 2 Learning in the Transition Room

December 15, 2022

We are establishing friendships and learning about different traditional tales. We focused on the story of “The Three Little Pigs” first. We were inspired by the story to create our own “Little Pig” game. When we go out to the playground, we pretend to be The Big Bad Wolf and The Three Little Pigs. We use the language from the story to re-enact it as we move around the playground and develop our gross motor skills. We even ‘went down the chimney’, just like the wolf in the story, only our chimney is the slide! We also spent time decorating the pigs’ houses with different materials such as straw, sticks and bricks.

We have also been learning about “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. For this story, we took the Bears for a picnic in the woods. The children helped to count how many bowls, cups and spoons we would need for the three bears. Then we took turns to scoop porridge on their plates. We have been learning to wait for our turns whilst we listen to others in small groups, and we have practiced our counting skills too. In the construction area, we made beds for Goldilocks and the Bears to sleep in. We even thought about details like a pillow!

We are now focusing on the story “The Gingerbread Man”. We have been rolling dice, counting the dots and choosing the right amount of gems to decorate the Gingerbread Man’s body. We had to think carefully about where we were adding details such as eyes or buttons. We also enjoyed using a stencil and rollers to paint our own gingerbread people. We decorated them afterwards.

It has been a real pleasure getting to know each other and spending time at nursery. We hope you have a really good holiday and a very Happy New Year! We are looking forward to a new term and to continue to learn together.
